About the Film
When prayer isn't enough, people turn to MadonnaLady Madonna is a documentary feature chronicling the humanitarian works of a small Nigerian hospital with a mission to serve anyone who comes through the doors. We follow Dr. Ogbono, the lead doctor at Madonna Hospital as he tries his best to serve the community of Umuahia. Limited by the resources of this Catholic mission hospital, he works to compete with the local government hospital in quality of care without consideration for the patient’s ability to pay up front.

We have the scientific knowledge and technology to treat a wide array of medical conditions, yet many of the most common and readily treated illnesses go undiagnosed simply because of a lack of access to medical treatment. We see this every day in the United States when people come into an Emergency Room with chronic illnesses that could have been treated with preventive care.

Clinic to Hospital
The one-room eye clinic that became a hospitalStarted as a one-room eye clinic, Madonna Hospital has grown into a fully functional regional hospital with satellite clinics of its own. Due to a lack of permanent infrastructure often times, patients out in the bush are unable to make it into the city for care. During the rainy season, this journey is all but impossible on the washed out dirt roads. Having clinics that serve the rural villages is a vital resource for the local community.

Madonna Hospital works hard to meet the needs of all of its patients
Without the resources of a government hospital, Madonna Hospital has partnered with the Colorado based non-profit West African Development and Support Organization to ship containers full of medical equipment and supplies from the United States.
These efforts have made it possible for the hospital to treat a wide range of critical cases. From HIV/AIDS treatment to neonatal intensive care, the doctors and nurses at Madonna Hospital are on the front lines every day.
